Agent-to-agent payment rails go live — Google's AP2 with 60+ payment partners
On 16 Sep 2025 Google announced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open extension of A2A and MCP that authorizes agent-led payments via cryptographically signed "Mandates" (Intent + Cart) as non-repudiable proof of user intent, launched with 60+ partners (Mastercard, PayPal, Amex, Coinbase) and an A2A x402 crypto extension (Google Cloud, 2025). The settlement rail for agent-to-agent commerce now exists — turning "sell verified data to machines" from thesis into a buildable product.
Google's Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) is an open protocol — extending the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — for securely authorizing and executing agent-led payments. Its core primitive is the cryptographically signed Mandate (Intent Mandate + Cart Mandate), a non-repudiable record of user intent, launched with 60+ payments and technology partners plus a companion A2A x402 extension for stablecoin/crypto rails.
Why it matters (spine): this is the missing piece under LD-06 and the Machine Lane. Once agents can pay each other, RDKG's verified growth-edge data can be metered and sold to machine customers — the long-run revenue line of "the ground truth AI needs to survive."
Falsifier: no production settlement volume within ~18 months. · Confidence: 0.9 (primary vendor announcement + public spec; adoption is the open question).
Provenance: Google Cloud, "Announcing Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)," 16 Sep 2025 (primary doc; links the public spec). Verified text: "Today, Google announced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)... an extension of the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol and Model Context Protocol (MCP)."
So we should build the agent-priced Frontier Feed to be Mandate-settleable now, so monetization is a config change, not a rebuild.
Design RDKG's verified-ground-truth API to be agent-priced and Mandate-settleable from day one (LD-06) — build for machine customers, not human checkout.
