Cultivated bluefin tuna reported 'weeks' from FDA clearance - but BlueNalu has none on record as of 7 Jul 2026

At Seafood Expo North America (March 2026), BlueNalu was reported by SeafoodSource to expect an FDA no-questions letter for cell-cultivated bluefin tuna toro within weeks, plus a San Diego restaurant launch. As of 7 Jul 2026, BlueNalu's own press page shows no such announcement (latest release 29 Dec 2025) and no completed FDA consultation for the company is on the public record. Wildtype's salmon (May 2025) is still the only US cultivated-seafood clearance. (Source: BlueNalu newsroom.)

Why it matters (money + metacrisis). Cultivated seafood aims at high-value, supply-constrained species — bluefin toro commands premium sushi prices while wild bluefin stocks are heavily fished — so a cleared cultivated toro is a genuine money story and an overfishing-relief (ocean / food-security) lever. The pathway is proven: Wildtype's cell-cultivated salmon received an FDA no-questions letter on 28 May 2025, the first cultivated seafood cleared for US sale. The open question is whether BlueNalu has actually crossed the same line — and right now the public record says it has not.

What would prove it wrong (either way). A completed FDA pre-market consultation or posted record for BlueNalu would confirm clearance and upgrade this to verified; continued absence confirms the caution. The falsifier for the bullish "already/imminently cleared" narrative is simply the FDA record staying empty.

Live-status check (2026-07-07). At Seafood Expo North America (March 2026), trade coverage (SeafoodSource) reported BlueNalu expected an FDA no-questions finding "within weeks" and planned a San Diego restaurant debut. As of this check, BlueNalu's own newsroom (bluenalu.com/press-releases) shows no clearance announcement — its most recent release is a 29 Dec 2025 financing — and no completed FDA consultation for BlueNalu is on the public record. The company is clearly still operating (Dec 2025 raise), so this is "not yet," not "defunct." Treat "cleared/imminent" as an unverified forward claim. Primary: BlueNalu newsroom (first-party); the trade-press "weeks away" line is signal only, never a source of record.

So we should

Do not log BlueNalu as cleared; watch the FDA cultured-cell pre-market consultation list and BlueNalu's newsroom, and only upgrade to verified when a completed FDA consultation appears. Use this as the template for hype-checking 'imminent approval' claims.
