Commonwealth Fusion becomes the first fusion company to file for grid interconnection (PJM, 28 Apr 2026)

On 28 April 2026 Commonwealth Fusion Systems announced it is the first fusion developer to apply to a major grid operator, filing a PJM Interconnection request for its planned 400 MW ARC plant — the Fall Line Fusion Power Station in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Dominion Energy advised. The move begins a 4–6 year study process targeting grid electricity in the early 2030s, sited squarely in Virginia's AI data-center corridor.

Why it matters (spine). Energy is the binding constraint on the machine layer (see the EIA AEO2026 card). CFS moving from physics to grid paperwork — advised by Dominion Energy, targeting "Data Center Alley" — is the clearest signal yet that fusion is being planned as AI baseload, not just a lab result. Money/metacrisis lever: firm, zero-carbon power that could relieve the data-center grid crunch the whole AI build-out now runs into.

What would prove it wrong (falsifier). CFS withdraws or lets the interconnection request lapse, or it stalls indefinitely in study; upstream, SPARC fails to demonstrate net energy, removing the technical basis for the ARC plant this application assumes.

Live-status check + triangulation. This is an interconnection APPLICATION — entering PJM's New Services Queue — NOT a signed PPA and NOT a built plant; first power is targeted for the early 2030s and the study process alone runs 4–6 years. Primary: the first-party CFS press release dated 28 April 2026 (also distributed via PRNewswire). The underlying official record is a PJM interconnection queue entry. Independently and adversarially corroborated by Scientific American, POWER Magazine, World Nuclear News, Modern Power Systems and ANS Nuclear Newswire — the last noting the fusion project sits "among 810 others" in PJM's queue, a concrete, boring corroborating detail. Prior offtake (Google 200 MW and Eni, both 2025) is out-of-window context, not the new event; the in-window milestone is the grid application itself.

So we should

Track fusion's grid-integration milestones (interconnection queue position, study-phase progress) as leading indicators for EKG's 'firm clean power for AI' thesis; log the PJM queue ID as a citable primary once public.
