The resale incumbent is buying provenance and selling attention — eBay's Q2 exhibit puts advertising at $596m on 2.7% of GMV and the Depop price at $1.4bn paid against $1.2bn announced (eBay, 5 Aug 2026)

eBay's Q2 2026 earnings exhibit, dated 5 August 2026, reports revenue of $3.134bn 'up 15% on an as-reported basis' and GMV of $22.398bn 'up 15%'. Advertising generated $596m, which eBay states is 2.7% of GMV, with first-party ad products at $570m, up 25%. It discloses that the Depop deal announced in February at $1.2bn in cash closed on 30 July for $1.4bn paid, inclusive of preliminary adjustments. In the same quarter eBay extended Authenticity Guarantee past 100 fashion brands and integrated the Enquirus luxury-watch database.

Why it matters (spine). Resale is where a money garden and the non-toxic spine meet, and the question RDKG has been asking is where a small team could hold ground once the marketplace layer consolidates. This filing answers part of it, and the answer is uncomfortable. eBay is not only consolidating the marketplace — it is building part of the trust layer that the 30 July card (ebay-depop-acquisition-closed, published in the 31 July run) identified as the opening. In the same quarter it "expanded coverage of Authenticity Guarantee to more than 100 fashion brands in the U.S. and U.K." and "integrated Enquirus, the trusted global database of registered luxury watches, across the U.S., U.K. and Germany, strengthening buyer confidence in eBay's luxury resale offering," while also extending Authenticity Guarantee to "U.K. trading cards valued at over £500." Provenance is being bought and built, not left on the table.

The Depop price, which the 30 July card could not state. That card recorded, correctly, that eBay's completion release "discloses no purchase price", and it deliberately excluded the circulating figure. The exhibit supplies both numbers and shows why one figure was never going to be enough: "In February 2026, eBay Inc. and Etsy, Inc. announced that they entered into a definitive agreement for eBay to acquire all of the outstanding equity interests of Depop, a leading C2C fashion marketplace, for $1.2 billion in cash, subject to certain purchase price adjustments. The transaction closed on July 30, 2026. We paid $1.4 billion in cash, inclusive of preliminary purchase price adjustments, subject to finalization." Announced $1.2bn, paid $1.4bn — a difference of $200m, which is my subtraction on eBay's two figures — and even the paid figure is preliminary by eBay's own wording. The circulating number the earlier card excluded was the announced price, not the price paid, which is the reason excluding it was right.

What the advertising line actually says, and what it does not. "The company's total advertising offerings generated $596 million of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, representing 2.7% of GMV. First-party advertising products on the eBay platform delivered $570 million of revenue in the second quarter of 2026, up 25% on an as-reported basis and up 24% on an FX-Neutral basis." Two derivations, both mine and flagged as such: $596m minus $570m leaves $26m of non-first-party advertising, which eBay does not break out or characterise; and $596m against the reported GMV of $22,398m gives 2.66%, consistent with eBay's stated 2.7%. Note what is missing — eBay gives a growth rate for the $570m first-party line but no growth rate for the $596m total, so this card makes no claim about how fast total advertising is growing.

The rest of the quarter, as printed. Revenue was "$3.1 billion, up 15% on an as-reported basis and up 14% on a foreign exchange ('FX') neutral basis" ($3,134m in the table), GMV "$22.4 billion, up 15%" ($22,398m), GAAP operating margin "increased to 21.6% for the second quarter of 2026, compared to 17.6% for the same period last year", and the company "returned $448 million to stockholders, including $310 million of share repurchases and $138 million paid in cash dividends." The supplemental table shows the growth is regionally lopsided: US GMV of $11,688m, up 24%, against international GMV of $10,710m, up 6%. Comparing those two lines is my reading of the table, not an eBay statement — the US figure is the larger of the pair, and the two sum exactly to the reported $22,398m total. Active Buyers were 136 million, up 2%.

What would prove it wrong (falsifier). The financial facts fail if eBay's Q2 2026 Form 10-Q restates them, or if the finalisation of Depop's purchase price adjustments moves the $1.4bn materially — the exhibit itself says it is "subject to finalization." The strategic reading — that the incumbent is closing part of the provenance opening — fails if Authenticity Guarantee stays a category programme for luxury and collectibles rather than becoming item-level data across the catalogue, or if eBay licenses none of it outward. And the reading is already partial by its own evidence: expanding a guarantee to "more than 100 fashion brands" is brand-by-brand coverage, not a general provenance record, and no eBay disclosure here says otherwise.

The card that makes this one weaker. gamestop-ebay-takeover-escalation (17 July 2026) records an unsolicited bid and a ~9.8% stake in eBay itself. Any strategic reading that treats eBay as a durable consolidator has to survive the fact that the consolidator is in play, and this exhibit does not settle it either way — the situation appears only obliquely, in the risk factors, as "the impact of stockholder activism or unsolicited acquisition proposals." No August development in that matter was verified this run.

The recommerce figure, flagged not endorsed. eBay states that "In 2025, eBay maintained 100% renewable energy across its operations and generated $5.3 billion in positive economic impact through recommerce." That is a company-defined metric with no methodology disclosed in this document and no third-party assurance named. It is reproduced here as a company statement, not as a measurement of avoided textile waste or avoided chemical load, neither of which this filing addresses.

Provenance (what I actually read). Fetched Exhibit 99.1 to eBay Inc.'s Q2 2026 earnings release, hosted on eBay's investor CDN at ebay.q4cdn.com/610426115/files/doc_financials/2026/q2/eBay-Q2-2026-Earnings-Press-Release.pdf, from the main thread on 21 August 2026. The document is headed "Exhibit 99.1" and datelined "San Jose, California, August 5, 2026." Figures taken directly from it: revenue $3,134m and the 15%/14% growth pair; GMV $22,398m with US $11,688m at 24% and international $10,710m at 6%; advertising $596m at 2.7% of GMV and first-party $570m up 25%/24%; GAAP operating margin 21.6% versus 17.6%; capital returns $448m comprising $310m repurchases and $138m dividends; Active Buyers 136m up 2%; the Depop announced price $1.2bn, close date 30 July 2026 and paid amount $1.4bn; the Authenticity Guarantee and Enquirus business highlights; the £500 trading-card threshold; and the $5.3bn recommerce statement. The derived figures in this card, all my arithmetic on eBay's numbers and all labelled as such above, are: the $26m residual advertising line ($596m − $570m); the 2.66% advertising-to-GMV ratio ($596m ÷ $22,398m); the $200m difference between the announced and paid Depop prices; and the comparison of US against international GMV, including the observation that the two regional lines sum exactly to the stated total. eBay states none of those four. I did not open the Form 10-Q, the earnings call or the slide presentation, so nothing sourced to those appears here — including any figure attributed to the call. One further precision: eBay's own wording gives revenue as "up 15% on an as-reported basis" and GMV as "up 15%" without that qualifier, so the two are not stated identically even though both read 15%.

Garden-code note (L41, flagged not resolved). As on the 30 July Depop card, TKG is deliberately left out of this card's gardens list because the code carries two live meanings in this repo — Toxicology per the Frontier Map, the machine layer per the beat file — and this run declines to pick one. The non-toxicity thread runs through domains instead.

So we should

Revise the 30 July opportunity claim rather than repeat it. That card (`ebay-depop-acquisition-closed`) named a five-part item-level data layer — authentication, provenance, condition, fibre and materials composition, non-toxicity — and flagged the absence of an auditable non-toxicity receipt as, in its own words, 'a gap worth testing, not an established fact.' This exhibit shows the incumbent building authentication in-house brand by brand, and a partial provenance record for one category through the Enquirus watch database. Condition, fibre and materials composition, and non-toxicity are untouched: the exhibit describes no programme addressing any of the three. Narrow the thesis to those three, keep the original hedge rather than hardening it, and price authentication as competitive rather than vacant.
