'Animal-free casein cleared by FDA' is overstated - Formo's GRN 1312 is still 'Pending'

Trade headlines say Formo won US GRAS clearance for precision-fermented casein, but FDA's GRAS Notice Inventory shows GRN 1312 - recombinant alpha-S1-casein via E. coli, notified by Formo Foods GmbH and NewMilkBuzz BV (Those Vegan Cowboys) - with FDA's response letter still listed as Pending as of 16 Jun 2026. Formo self-affirmed GRAS in Dec 2024 and can sell on that basis, but FDA has not responded. (Source: FDA GRN 1312.)

Why it matters (money + metacrisis). Casein is ~80% of milk protein and the functional workhorse behind cheese melt, stretch and emulsification — the property plant-based cheese has never matched. A precision-fermented alpha-S1-casein would let "animal-free" cheese behave like dairy, and the timing is sharp: a US whey-protein shortage and H5N1 disruption to dairy are structural tailwinds. Metacrisis lever: decoupling dairy protein from cows (methane/land/water). But this card is primarily a discipline flag — the money story is real; the "FDA cleared it" story is not yet true.

What would prove it wrong. FDA posts a no-questions letter for GRN 1312 — which would upgrade this to verified — or, conversely, ceases to evaluate it at the notifier's request, which would downgrade it. Either resolves the current Pending status.

Live-status check (2026-07-07). FDA GRAS Notice Inventory GRN 1312 — recombinant alpha-S1-casein produced in E. coli (strain DSM 35603), notified jointly by Formo Foods GmbH and NewMilkBuzz BV (Those Vegan Cowboys), docket FDA-2026-N-1832, intended use up to 25 g/100 g in cheese analogs — shows "FDA's Letter: Pending", inventory page last updated 16 Jun 2026. Formo self-affirmed GRAS in Dec 2024 (its own determination) and can legally sell on that basis, which primary-quality trade coverage (e.g., MycoStories, 10 Jun 2026) reported accurately but headline writers rendered as an FDA "clearance." Added risk: the self-affirmed-GRAS pathway itself faces a proposed FDA rule to eliminate it plus a New York bill. Tier: signal until FDA responds. Cite FDA GRN 1312; do not reproduce.

So we should

Hold Formo's casein at signal until FDA posts a no-questions letter on GRN 1312; separately flag the self-affirmed-GRAS pathway itself as at-risk (FDA proposed rule + NY bill), because much of the alt-protein 'cleared in the US' narrative rests on self-GRAS, not FDA review.
