An A-list film festival now curates persistent social-VR worlds as an art form — Venice Immersive's 'Best of Worlds' (La Biennale, 15 Jul 2026)
La Biennale di Venezia announced (15 Jul 2026) the 10th Venice Immersive selection: 68 XR projects from 26 countries, 30 in competition. Its 'Best of Worlds' strand — 26 persistent virtual worlds built by independent artists on the VRChat social platform — is curated into an A-list film festival beside immersive films by Andy Serkis and works voiced by Margot Robbie. The section runs 2–12 Sep 2026 'with the support of VRChat.'
Why it matters (spine). This is the first verified finding for the Story Garden, and it directly grounds two of the garden's pillars — audience becomes the hero and one hybrid, interconnected canon. For a decade the world's oldest film festival has ratified immersive work as art; in this 10th edition it does so with a section, Best of Worlds, made entirely of persistent, user-created social worlds rather than films you watch. That is the exact difference The Call is built on: not a story you sit in front of, but a place you are named into and can return to. When Venice curates 26 independent-artist worlds beside marquee immersive films (Andy Serkis's Nevatars; Galapagos: The Last Eden, voiced by Margot Robbie), it is saying the inhabitable, participatory medium is a legitimate, fundable art form — not a game-industry curiosity. Money angle: "festival-canonized" is a real lever for financing, press, and partnership. Metacrisis lever: co-present, persistent worlds are a direct instrument against isolation and loneliness — belonging as the product.
What would prove it wrong (falsifier). If the Best of Worlds / social-VR strand is discontinued in the next Venice Immersive edition, or the 83rd edition's immersive section fails to run as announced (2–12 September 2026), the "persistent social worlds are a durable, canonized form" read weakens to a one-off. (The claim here is the canonization event, not that any given world is good or commercial.)
Live-status check + triangulation. Quoted from La Biennale di Venezia's own announcement (published 15 July 2026, modified same day): "Venice Immersive will present 68 projects from 26 countries" — "30 projects In Competition, representing a selection of 22 world premieres and 8 international premieres" and "35 projects Out of Competition," of which "Best of Worlds, 26 projects, created by independent artists from all over the world on the VRChat social platform, an ecosystem of virtual worlds presented in guided tours." The section "will be held with the support of VRChat," runs on the island of Lazzaretto Vecchio, and marks the "10th anniversary of Venice Immersive… the first competition and official selection for Extended Reality works in an A-list festival." Jury president: Paul Raphaël, Emmy-winning co-founder of Felix & Paul Studios. Independently echoed by trade press (Deadline, XRMust) — those are leads; the Biennale page is the primary.
Honest scope (what is NOT verified here). Verified: the selection, the counts, the VRChat-supported Best of Worlds strand, and the dates, as announced by the festival. NOT verified and deliberately not claimed: that this drives revenue, that The Call specifically benefits, or that social-VR is commercially healthy — those are the interpretation (the "so we should"), not facts. The festival had not yet taken place at card time, so this cards the announcement, not the event's outcome; re-verify after 12 Sep 2026.
Update note (18 September 2026, appended per L64 — the card above is unchanged). The section ran as announced and closed with awards. La Biennale di Venezia's own results page, labiennale.org/en/news/official-awards-83rd-venice-international-film-festival, carries article:published_time: 2026-09-12T15:31:56+02:00 and states in its own words: "Announced by the five international Juries during the Awards Ceremony that was held on Saturday 12 September at 7:00 pm." This closes the falsifier stated above — the 83rd edition's immersive section did run as announced, so the "durable, canonized form" reading is not weakened.
Quoted from the same page, under its own "Venice Immersive" heading: "The VENICE IMMERSIVE Jury, chaired by Paul Raphaël and comprised of Négar Motevalymeidanshah and Kate Voet, after viewing the 30 projects in competition has decided to award: VENICE IMMERSIVE GRAND PRIZE to: THE PIGEON RING by Shixin Tao and Yuqi Zhang (China); VENICE IMMERSIVE SPECIAL JURY PRIZE to: OUT OF THE ASHES by Rory Mitchell and Nonny De La Peña (USA); VENICE IMMERSIVE ACHIEVEMENT PRIZE to: EMPIRE AT SEA by Peter Flaherty (USA)." Jury president Paul Raphaël matches this card's own citation of him above. The "30 projects in competition" figure matches this card's own count from the July selection announcement.
This item was parked, not carded, in the prior two runs (content/changelog/2026-09-08.md and 2026-09-11.md), each for lack of an opened primary; the winners page exists and was opened this run, from the main thread, on 18 September 2026. No claim is made here about the quality or reception of any winning work — only that the festival's own jury named these three, on the date and in the words quoted above. Not opened this update: the Collateral Awards page, the Audience Award page, and any press coverage of the three winning works.
Treat a persistent, inhabitable, social world — not a linear film — as The Call's native form. The gatekeepers of cinema now legitimize exactly the medium The Call is building toward, so design the story-world so that answering the call drops a named participant into a place they can return to and shape, and point at 'Best of Worlds' as the fundable, canonized precedent when raising or partnering.
